Order of Battle:
GERMAN LUFTWAFFE IN WORLD WAR II
(Dr Chris McNab)
Germany's air force, the Luftwaffe, played a critical role in the Third Reich's victories in the early part of World War II, providing the airborne component of the German forces' irresistible Blitzkrieg ("lightning war") tactics that swept all armies before it from 1939 to 1942.
Broken down by campaign and key battles within each theater of war, Order of Battle: German Luftwaffe in World War II illustrates the strengths and organizational structures of the Third Reich's air force, building into a detailed compendium of information.
Full-color order of battle tree diagrams at Luftflotten, Gruppe, Fliegerkorps and squadron level help the reader quickly understand how and where bomber (Kampfgeschwader), fighter (Jagdgeschwader), dive-bomber (Stukageschwader), and reconnaissance (Aufklarungsgruppe) units were employed. Quick reference tables provide unit strengths, aircraft types, and base locations, while profile diagrams show typical numbers of aircraft at squadron level.
With extensive organizational diagrams, tables and full-color campaign maps, Order of Battle: German Luftwaffe in World War II is an attractive, easy-to-use guide to the German air force of World War II. The book is an essential reference for any serious enthusiast of air warfare in the twentieth century.
Hard cover, 7.5" x 9.5", 192 pages, 20 illustrations and photos.

In the Skies
of France - A Chronicle of JG 2 "Richthofen" (Erik Mombeeck)
More than sixty years have elapsed since the events described in this, the first truly detailed history of JG 2 to appear. The second fighter wing of the Luftwaffe was among the most celebrated and thus 'news-worthy' of all Luftwaffe fighter units, spearheading the Blitzkrieg in the West and operating primarily over northern France and the Channel coastline. Awarded the honour title "Richthofen" as early as 1935, the Geschwader carved out its reputation during the invasion of France and the Low Countries and a number of its pilots were among the leading Luftwaffe aces of the Battle of Britain. JG 2 was to remain in France when the majority of Luftwaffe fighter units headed east for the Russian Front during the late spring and early summer of 1941.

Hardcover, large format, 316 pages, +400 photos, 16 colour profiles, maps, many vivid first-hand accounts. English. Price: $79 USD / $99 CAD
Storming the Bombers
- A Chronicle of JG 4 (Erik Mombeeck)
Less well-known than its sister unit, JG 4 was to meet a similar tragic fate in the ruins of the Reich. Facing the might of the Allied air armadas pounding the Reich almost daily from mid-1944, the young pilots of JG 4's II. Gruppe -flying specially armed and armoured Fw 190s- committed themselves to destroying at least one bomber on every sortie, even pledging to bring them down by ramming if all else failed.
Hardcover, large format, 242 pages, +300 photos, 8 colour profiles, maps, many vivid first-hand accounts. English. Price: $74 USD / $93 CAD

& color photos and line drawing; Softcover. ISBN: 1857802306. Price: $37
USD / $42 CAD/INT.
This book is different from what has been published before on this subject due to its strong emphasis on the design and development of the aircraft and its initial flight-testing. Among the other topics, which the book will cover in detail under the headings of designs and development, are prototype flight-testing, early marks, night- fighter variants, construction information, service both in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, test beds and trials aircraft. There are also numerous data tables and information on the serials carried by the aircraft.
The authors had access to a wealth of material in the United Kingdom’s Pacific Record Office that was not previously available to researchers on the aircraft. The work also provides the opportunity to include many previously unpublished or relatively unknown photos, including some rare early color transparencies. A wealth of detailed views will be of particular use to those building models of the aircraft.
The Meteor first flew in World War II and served with 16 overseas air forces as well as with the RAF.

Manfred von Richthofen
- The Aircraft, Myths and Accomplishments of The Red Baron (James F.
Miller)
Rittmeister Manfred von Richthofen stands as the most famous fighter pilot of all time. The image of Richthofen and his all-red Fokker triplane are ubiquitous symbols of German aerial might. From the outset he set and achieved his goals with a focus and determination that overcame initial shortcomings, propelling him from an unknown two-seater pilot into a brilliant airman, tactician, leader, mentor, hero and, ultimately, a martyr of Germany.
In this limited run and outstanding new study, James Miller focuses not only on Richthofen's™ stick-and-rudder abilities but also the aircraft with which he prosecuted war. Also Richthofen''s™ epic battle with Hawker, the events of his July 1917 wounding, his rivalry with Voss, and several inaccurate yet persistent myths are examined in unprecedented detail, all of which are augmented by 90 rare photographs, medical illustrations, and 26 of Miller's™ beautiful detailed colour aircraft profiles and 12 wing plan views.
Manfred von Richthofen “The Aircraft, Myths and Accomplishments of The Red Baron"™ forms one of the most comprehensive and refreshing accounts published in recent years.

Hans-Joachim
Marseille - The Luftwaffe Ritterkreuzträger
1939-1945, A Resource Guide to the Aces and their Aircraft
(By James H. Kitchens, III and John R. Beaman, Jr.)Few fighter pilots in the history of aviation have achieved such spectacular recognition as Hans-Joachim Marseille. His accomplishments over the deserts of North Africa during the Second World War earned him the sobriquet ‘The Star of Africa’. On one day in September 1942, he accounted for no fewer than seventeen Allied aircraft shot down in three missions. His final score of 158 enemy aircraft would be the highest such achievement against the Western Allies throughout the war.
This book is not intended as another biography or photographic account of Marseille’s life and career, but rather as a valuable and unique encyclopedia to the prevailing historical record on the man and his aircraft, from his early Bf 109 E to the Bf 109 G of his later operational service with Jagdgeschwader 27 in Africa
Based on sustained and exacting study by the authors, both of whom are internationally recognized authorities on the Luftwaffe, this study offers those already familiar with Marseille an immensely rich and easy to use reference source which may well dispel numerous preconceptions. To those approaching the subject in detail for the first time, the book will provide comprehensive analysis and revealing insight into Marseille’s aircraft as well as a guide for further study.
With fascinating photographs and specially commissioned artwork by leading aviation artist, Tom Tullis, this is the reference source for Hans-Joachim Marseille and his aircraft.
Soft cover, 8.3" x 11.7", 64 pages, 37 rare b+w and color photographs, 10 beautiful color artwork profiles and 15 rudder profiles. Price: $28 USD / $31 CAD/INT.
Hans-Ekkehard
Bob
(Christer Bergstrom)The story of Hans-Ekkehard Bob’s wartime career is one which personifies the life and experiences of many of the Luftwaffe’s leading Experten – but Bob numbered himself amongst the few who had flown in one of Germany’s pre-war bi-plane fighter units through to the Me 262 jet fighter in 1945.
He took part in the campaigns in Poland and France, and fought
in some of the most intense air combats of the Battle of Britain shooting down
fourteen Spitfires and Hurricanes, following which he was awarded the coveted
Ritterkreuz – the Knight’s Cross – before being posted to the Balkans. Then came
Russia – a vast, challenging battlefront which tested men and machines to their
limit. He survived, and when he finally left the Eastern Front in early 1943 he
had 56 confirmed victories to his credit – all scored flying the Messerschmitt
Bf 109.
When 292 ShAP attempted to attack Dugino aerodrome on the morning of 17 December, Bob scrambled as the Il-2s appeared on the horizon. The fast-approaching Shturmoviks and Bob’s climbing Bf 109 G-2 met head on; Bob had opened fire with all three cannon before he even had the gear up. The first Il-2 exploded and crashed in a snow drift. Bob turned and pursued another, opening up with all his cannon, until this too crashed into the ground. The congratulations from his Staffel mates over the radio were apparently intercepted by the Soviets, for on the following day they heard Radio Moscow announce: ‘Sooner or later we will get the commander of the Devil’s squadron.’
Transferred to the West, he went into action against USAAF heavy bombers and led the famed Jagdgeschwader 3 ‘Udet’ on operations. The end of the war saw him serving with Adolf Galland’s famous JV 44.
Acclaimed aviation historian Christer Bergstöm has drawn upon personal recollections and records to produce this in-depth and graphic account of the wartime experiences of one the Luftwaffe’s leading Jagdflieger. The text is enhanced by rare photographs taken from Hans-Ekkehard Bob’s own collection as well as highly detailed color artwork by leading aviation artist, Claes Sundin.
At the last moment, Bob pushed the stick forward and attempted to dive his Bf 109 to the left, and beneath the crippled bomber. But his maneuver was carried out a fraction of a second too late… Bob flashed beneath the bomber and, just as he did, he heard a crash and felt a terrible jolt. Looking back, he saw that his Bf 109 had lost its whole tail section, and he also saw that a part of the bomber’s starboard wing was missing.
Soft cover, 8.3" x 11.7", 72 pages, 77 rare b+w photographs, 11 beautiful color artwork profiles. Price: $30 USD $33 CAD.
Max-Hellmuth
Ostermann -
ZG1, JG21, JG54 (Christer Bergstrom)The distance to the Spitfire diminished to 100 metres – by which time the wings of the Spitfire covered the circle in his gunsight – and Ostermann was still holding his fire. In the next second, the Spitfire opened fire and the Bf 109 in front dived away. This was the moment Ostermann had been waiting for. He pressed both firing buttons and immediately scored a series of direct hits. The Spitfire burst into flames and descended vertically, leaving a grey plume of smoke. A moment later a sudden white eruption of spray in the sea below indicated the point where the Spitfire went in…
From a young, inexperienced, novice pilot who struggled to master the twin-engined Messerschmitt Bf 110 Zerstörer in early 1940 to a fearsome exponent of the Bf 109 over the English Channel, Yugoslavia and the Russian Front, Max-Hellmuth Ostermann’s war ended in August 1942 with 102 confirmed aerial victories to his credit – the majority of them against the Soviet Air Force.
When Strebenk saw the German four-aircraft Schwarm disperse and the enemy pilots came breaking into him, he banked to the left to evade the attack. But that did not help him against a skilful pilot like Max-Hellmuth Ostermann. The German pilot opened the throttle wide and was soon in position, 180 metres behind Strebenk’s Bf 109. When Karlo Strebenk tried to evade through a descending left turn, Ostermann’s cannon shells ripped through the fuselage and wings of his Bf 109 in a perfect deflection shot. The Yugoslavian Messerschmitt turned over and fell vertically toward the earth until it exploded in a field below. Karl Strebenk had no chance of surviving.
While to date, the diminutive Ostermann has not been regarded by English language historians as one of the most renowned of the Luftwaffe Experten, he was nevertheless decorated with the Knight’s Cross with Oakleaves and Swords – the tenth officer in the German armed forces to receive the award – for his ‘repeatedly proven heroism’. Ostermann frequently scored two victories in one day and his final operations saw him in command of a Staffel of JG 54, the famous Grünherz-Geschwader.
A glance at the ammunition counter in front of him told him that he still had enough ammunition left, so he kicked hard on the rudder and dived down. He singled out one DB-3 and hung on to it as it raced, just meters above the treetops of a forest. This was dangerous flying. The Bf 109 bucked and bounced in the slipstream from the bomber’s twin engines, and Ostermann had to hold the stick hard so that his fighter was not pushed into the treetops which flashed past underneath. When he gave the first burst of fire, the air currents caused him to miss. He pushed the throttle handle forward, turned out of the slipstream and attacked obliquely from astern instead. Flashes indicated hits on the starboard engine and fuselage of the bomber. The engine emitted a trail of smoke which rapidly grew thick and black..

HULL, HELL AND HALIFAX AN ILLUSTRATED HISTORY OF NO.4 GROUP 1937-1948
(Chris Blanchett)
First published in 1993, this accomplished history of Royal Air Force Bomber Command 4 Group has been unavailable for many years. The group will be forever associated with Yorkshire, where it was based for 11 years from 1937 to 1948.
The core of the book focuses on the tremendous efforts made by the squadrons allocated to the 4 Group during World War II. Backed by hard- working and loyal ground crew, night after night, many hundreds of brave young men flew off into the unknown in Whitleys, Wellingtons and Halifaxes to bring retribution to the Third Reich. Aircraft from 4 Group were the first to fly over Berlin, much to the embarrassment of Göring. They were also the first to bomb Italy. The casualty rate was horrific, especially in the early years of the war when a bomber crew rarely completed a full tour of 30 operations.

Since the collapse of the old Soviet system, the much greater openness in Russian society has meant that information, which until a relatively short time ago was treated as classified, has gradually become available.
This latest title in the Red Star series provides an in-depth study of the Kamov 27/-32 series helicopters. The Kamov Ka27 helicopter was first produced for the Soviet navy in 1973. Several variants including the Ka29 and Ka31 were produced. The Ka32 was a civil version of the Ka27 that was first manufactured in 1980. Once again several variants were built, including those for transport and shipboard utility purposes.
BERIEV'S JET FLYING BOATS: Red Star Volume 18 by Yefim Gordon. 8-1/2 X 11; 128 pages; Color and b/w photos; softcover. ISBN: 1857802365. Price: $37 USD / $42 CAD/INT
This is a detailed survey of the jet-powered flying boats produced by the Beriev design bureau. Established as long ago as the 1930s, Beriev is one of the less well known of the Soviet design bureaus. The organization is still active as an aircraft design and manufacturing business today. Its particular forte lay in the development of flying boats. While these have been powered by both piston and jet engines, this book focuses on those jet-engined aircraft produced from the late 1960s onwards. These include the Be-30, Be-32, BE-43, Be-103 and Be-200. These aircraft were intended for a wide variety of uses, including passenger transport and maritime rescue operations.
The book is highly illustrated with color and black and white photographs and line drawings and provides a great deal of information on these aircraft, on which little has been published in the west until now. Many aviation enthusiasts and modelers are interested in flying boats, and this area of aviation in general is one which publishers have tended to neglect.
