FLEDGLING EAGLES (Barry Ketley)

This latest addition to the long-established Luftwaffe Colours series examines the training that all Luftwaffe aircrew and specialists had to pass through before participating in active service. Various stages of pilot and flight training are examined, alongside a varied and fascinating selection of photographs and artwork profiles. All levels of the Luftwaffe training system before and during the war are covered, including elementary and advanced training schools, fighter, bomber, dive-bomber and ground-attack, night fighters and heavy fighters, weapons, signals and formation, and instructors' schools.

Many different aircraft are also included, from dedicated training machines such as the, Ar 68 and Bü 131 biplanes to the Ar 96 and Fw 56 advanced trainers. Virtually all main front line types are examined, including the famous Bf 109 and Do 17, as well as the twin-seat Fw 190, Me 262, and even Me163s. Continuing the narrative excellence and impressive artwork that enthusiasts have come to expect from this series, this new volume is the perfect addition to the collection, and will be essential reading for aviation historians. Modelers will also find the artworks and side profiles invaluable in recreating the many aircraft of the Luftwaffe.

HANDLEY PAGE HALIFAX (Ken Merrick)

The name Handley Page has been associated with the building of bomber aircraft since World War 1, thus it’s no surprise that in 1936 the British Air Staff awarded the company with a development contract for another new aircraft. Four out of every ten heavy bombers built in Great Britain were Halifaxes, and together with the Avro Lancaster they shared the RAF's strategic night bombing offensive from 1941 to the ultimate crescendo in 1944.

Though perhaps not as shapely as the Lancaster, its deeper and more spacious slab-sided fuselage made it more suitable for a much wider variety of roles. The type served with RAF Bomber Command on high and low-level attacks over occupied Europe and Germany, as well as undertaking radar counter-measures. It was used for Coastal Command on anti-submarine and shipping attacks, and also on the much overlooked but critical meteorological duties, such as making the historic D-Day weather analysis.

During the war years the Halifax flew 75,532 bombing raids over Germany, dropping over 227,610 tons of bombs. In total 6,176 Halifax machines were built, undergoing continuous development and improvement through the years. Post war, it operated on Transport and Coastal Command duties, and served in Europe, the Middle East, and India before finally leaving RAF service in 1953. The Halifax was a much-loved aircraft by the crews who flew in it, as it was able to absorb considerable battle damage and still manage to bring airmen safely back home; it had the highest survival rate for aircrew.

Within these pages Ken Merrick has written an immense study of the impressive Handley Page Halifax, setting out to prove that the type, for its time, was a bomber 'second to none'. This detailed work is the fruit of many years of research, including much new information about the development, design, and service of the aircraft, and will be essential reading for aviation modelers and historians worldwide.

LUFTWAFFE SUPPORT UNITS (Barry Rosch)

Before and during the war, the Luftwaffe used and adapted virtually every one of its major front-line aircraft types for all support roles, including ambulance, communications, headquarters, and observer services. For Luftwaffe enthusiasts and modelers, the main interest in such aircraft lies in the wide variety of types, and the abundance of camouflage and markings suited to specific theatres, factory and field modifications, and lesser-known emblems.

This book includes all-white Ju 52 ambulance aircraft, the famous Fieseler Storch observation aircraft in both desert and winter schemes, as well as many lesser-known types, including helicopters.

The book features the following types: Bücker Bü 181 Bestmann, Fieseler Fi 156 Storch, Flettner Fl 282 Kolibri helicopter, Focke-Wulf Fw 58 Weihe, Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor, Heinkel He 46, Heinkel He 111, Henschel Hs 126, Junkers Ju 52, Junkers Ju 88, Messerschmitt Bf 109, and Siebel Si 204.

"This is a great addition to the Luftwaffe Colour series, and forms an excellent supplement to the Jagdwaffe and Kampfflieger titles." -Internet Modeler, reviewed by Chris Banyai-Riepl, September 2009

LUFTWAFFE HIT-AND-RUN RAIDERS (Chris Goss)

In 1940 the Luftwaffe fitted bombs to their Messerschmitt 109s and Messershcmitt 110s, thus creating the Jagdbomber or Jabo. Jabos played a key role in the Battle of Britain, but then appeared to be forgotten until early 1942 when two fighter Staffeln were formed on the Western Front and carried out deadly lightning, low-level, hit-and-run attacks in southern Britain. Despite the relative successes of these two units, they were combined and redesignated Schenellkampfgeschwader 10 or SKG 10 in the spring of 1943. The Luftwaffe later decided to commit these warplanes to risky night operations, but the first such mission on April 16, 1943, sadly ended in tragedy. They were redesigned in 1944 and eventually named Nachtschlachtgruppe 20. Despite shortages of aircraft and pilots, they continued to fly on crucial missions against the Remagen Bridge and Allied motor transport columns until the end of the war.

With many rare and previously unpublished photographs of both the crews and aircraft, this impressive book tells the story of the famous nocturnal Jabo attacks carried out by I/SKG 10 and its subsequent designations. Fully illustrated throughout, it draws upon genuine Allied combat reports, Luftwaffe mission reports, and the expert post-war analysis carried out by its highly decorated commander, Major Kurt Dahlmann. This masterful study belongs in the library of every serious military historian and modeler.

HEINKEL He 162 (Robert Forsyth and Eddie J. Creek)

From the summer of 1944, the adversity facing the leadership of the Third Reich was formidable. Ironically, the very existence of such adversity prompted many inventive designs for the air defense of the Reich on a determined and even manic scale. The pinnacle of these accomplishments was the so-called Volksjäger (the 'People's Fighter') project, which was, and still is, regarded as a miracle of production. Created in desperation by the Nazi leadership in mid-1944, and powered by a BMW turbojet, the He 162 was known to its pilots as the 'Spatz' (the 'Sparrow'). It represented an unprecedented aeronautical and engineering achievement, with the aircraft going from drawing board to prototype flight in just three months, often at considerable human cost.

In this book, aviation historians Robert Forsyth and Eddie J. Creek draw on hundreds of previously unpublished Heinkel company papers to offer a unique insight into the workings of the Nazi production system in the late-war period, as well as other German and Allied documents. Their work is supported by many rare photographs, line drawings, facsimile documents, and highly detailed color artwork by He 162 specialist Simon Schatz. This is the first major history of the Heinkel He 162 Spatz published in the English language.

JUNKERS Ju 287: Germany's Forward Swept Wing Bomber (Stephen Ransom and Peter Korrell with Peter Evans)

The extraordinary Junkers Ju 287, the first truly swept-winged, jet-powered aircraft, took to the sky in August 1944, at a time when Germany was suffering sustained round-the-clock bombing by the Allied forces. Despite such adverse development conditions, this large and futuristic aircraft represented a remarkable accomplishment in aeronautical design. It was a flying test bed built to develop the technology required for a multi-engined jet bomber aircraft and was powered by four Junkers Jumo 004 engines.

Featuring a revolutionary swept-forward wing and built largely from scavenged components from other aircraft, it was designed and came to fruition very quickly, using parts of a Heinkel He 177 and a Junkers Ju 88 bomber. The project was considered top secret and evaded Allied intelligence for many months.

This exciting new book is beautifully illustrated throughout with striking photographs, several of which are previously unpublished, and contains much new and revised information on the Ju 287.  It is certain to become the definitive account of this remarkable aircraft. The authors also trace the development of the forward swept-winged aircraft prior to its appearance, the aircraft's subsequent history in the Soviet Union, its post-war influence on aircraft projects, and designs produced in Germany.

FOCKE-WULF Fw 200 CONDOR (Juan-Carlos Salgado)

This is a lavishly and highly detailed account of one of the most elegant and deadly aircraft to serve during World War II. Designed and built in the late 1930s, originally as a civilian airliner to compete with the American DC-2 and DC-3, the Fw 200 grabbed the international stage when it broke the record for flying non-stop from Berlin to New York in August 1938.  However, it is for its role as a maritime strike aircraft in World War II that the Fw 200 gained its reputation as the 'Scourge of the Atlantic'.

The heavily armed Condor was equipped with a formidable array of bombs, 1,000 kg air mines, Hs 293 guided missiles, as well as the latest radio equipment and search radars.  It inflicted a massive toll on Allied convoys and merchant shipping over the North Atlantic between 1940 and 1943. As the war progressed, and despite the fact that the Allies devised methods to increase convoy defense, the Condor soldiered on, and operated supply missions from bases in Norway in October 1944.

The author, a renowned aviation specialist, has uncovered unique and unpublished material on this most revered aircraft of the Luftwaffe, which will appeal to scale modelers and historians alike. The book will also feature the lesser-known use of the Fw 200 by the Spanish, as well as Focke-Wulf Condors in Soviet and South American colors.  This is the most thorough and dedicated history of the only four-engined, long-range aircraft in service with the Luftwaffe during World War II.

HEINKEL He 177 GREIFF (J. Richard Smith and Eddie J. Creek)

The He 177 was a formidable warplane with the potential to have been a lethal weapon for the Nazis. Unfortunately, it was ill-fated and suffered from serious problems such as an inherently poor engine design and 'knee-jerk' role diversification by the commanders in charge.

Furthermore, the aircraft's development and testing was crucially damaged by the turbulent political environment of the day. Nazi leadership agonized over the aircraft's delay and deployment, and so the aircraft which enticed thousands with its daring potential, sadly failed to reach these standards.

Nevertheless, the He 177 was a remarkable warplane which adopted several different roles at various stages of its development. It was considered an excellent dive-bomber and strategic bomber, with the capabilities of an anti-shipping aircraft and transport and tank-destroyer.

In this extensively researched new study, accomplished authors J. Richard Smith and Eddie J. Creek shed new light on this sometimes overlooked aircraft and its unique service history. Using a carefully selected collection of photographs and drawings to supplement the informative narrative, the authors have succeeded in producing a masterpiece that will be essential reading for all military and social historians of this period, as well as for scale modelers wanting to recreate this exceptional warplane.

PRINCES OF DARKNESS (Claire Rose Knott)

This unique new book offers enthusiasts, historians, and wargamers a rare insight into the fighting careers of Prince Heinrich Zu Sayn-Wittgenstein and Prince Egmont zur Lippe-Weissenfeld within the Luftwaffe's night-fighter force.

Prince Heinrich Zu Sayn-Wittgenstein was the third highest scoring ace of night-fighters in the Luftwaffe during World War II. Serving from mid 1941 until his death in 1944, he was a leading Ju88C-6 nightfighter pilot, later becoming the Gruppenkommander of part of NJG 5 on the Eastern Front. He was killed on January 21, 1944, after shooting down four RAF bombers, when his aircraft was brought down either by return fire or an RAF nightfighter. His aerial victories at that time were 83 in total, on both Eastern (29 Soviet) and Western Fronts (54).

Prince Egmont zur Lippe-Weissenfield, an Austrian, started his career as a daylight fighter pilot flying 'heavy' fighters. He first became a nightfighter when serving under the famous Helmut Lent as Staffelkapitän of 5./NJG 2 in November 1941. He is accredited with 51 aerial victories while flying the Messerschmitt Bf 110, and has been ranked 21st among the German night fighter aces. He was tragically killed while serving as a member of the Stabsschswarm on March 3, 1944, when his aircraft crashed during a flight over the Ardennes.

This stunning new book is the result of many years of research into archival resources, previously unpublished personal family correspondence, photographs acquired during interviews with the respective families, technical data, and recollections supplied by the Princes' night-fighter contemporaries. Also included are many rare photographs of the pilots' dramatic color artwork commissioned of the Messerschmitt Bf 110 and Junkers Ju88 night fighters.

MESSERSCHMITT Bf 110 C, D and E
(John Vasco and Fernando Estanislau)

The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was the Luftwaffe's prime multi-role heavy fighter. By the time Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, 10 Luftwaffe Gruppen had been equipped with this heavy fighter. However, as a long-range escort fighter, the Bf 110C received a disastrous mauling at the hands of the more nimble Hurricane and Spitfire during the "Battle of Britain". Rather than protecting the bombers under escort, the Bf 110C formations usually found that they were hard-pressed to defend themselves, and the farcical situation developed in which single-seat Bf 109E fighters were having to afford protection to the escort fighters. The complete failure of the Bf 110C in the role for which it had been conceived led to its eventual withdrawal from the Channel coast but did not result in any reduction in its production priority

Author John Vasco has researched a wealth of new material on the C, D and E variants of this aircraft, including many previously unpublished photographs and high-quality artwork and color profiles. This detailed examination of the aircraft will be an invaluable work of reference to historians and modelers of the Bf 110.

BOMBER UNITS OF THE LUFTWAFFE 1933-1945: A Reference Source Volumes 1 and 2

by Henry L. de Zeng IV & Douglas G. Stankey

During the interwar years, both in Britain and Germany, some believed that bombers could expand the battlefield to the home front of their opponents, damaging morale and disrupting the means of production. The German Blitzkrieg relied heavily on the Luftwaffe’s bomber force. From Spain to Barbarossa, the integration of the Kampfflieger forces into the overall strategy proved highly successful. However, once Germany was forced on the retreat, the tactics of the Luftwaffe’s bomber forces changed from offensive to defensive actions.

This book's authors are well-known and highly respected as experts in their field and have spent some 20 years compiling this most comprehensive, detailed history and listing of all the Luftwaffe's bomber units. Both volumes cover some of the 50 bomber Geschwader, together with their component Staff flights and Gruppen. The books cover pre-war formation, designation and reorganization, and continue through to the end of the war, with locations, bases, and transfers together with an exhaustive breakdown of theatres of operations, key battles and missions flown, and aircraft types that were flown by each unit. In addition there are comprehensive listings of unit commanders and when – and often where – they were in command.

Profusely illustrated with a large number of previously unpublished photographs depicting bomber aircraft in their unit markings with, wherever possible, close-ups of the unit emblems and badges, of which many are color. In addition, the book contains unique photographs of many of the unit commanders.

LUFTWAFFE AT WAR: Gathering Storm 1933-1939

by Edward Hooten. During World War II all three elements of Germany’s armed forces – army, navy, and air force – had their part to play in the evolution of German strategy, but in terms of the Blitzkrieg it was the Luftwaffe that had perhaps the most important role. Its function was to obtain air superiority over the theatre of operations and cause as much disruption as possible to the enemy’s ground forces before the army swept forward. Therefore an understanding of the growth and development of the Luftwaffe in the years before 1939 is essential to being able to fully comprehend the role that it adopted after September 1939.

This first title in a new series examines the growth and development of the Luftwaffe between Hitler’s accession to power and the first dramatic use of Blitzkrieg against Poland in September 1939. Starting with the exploration of the limited air force inherited by the Nazis in 1933, the author records in detail how the Luftwaffe rapidly expanded thereafter. Including how the Luftwaffe gained useful combat experience during the Spanish Civil War, before becoming the potent force that was unleashed in the autumn of 1939.

Specs: 9 x 12"; 96 pages; 200 b/w and color photos; softcover; English text. Price: $30 USD / $33 CAD (Order button below)

LUFTWAFFE AT WAR VOL.2: Blitzkrieg in the West 1939-1940

by Edward Hooton. In September 1939, after years of increasing tension, the German assault on Poland unleashed warfare in Europe for the second time in a generation. For Poland’s allies the speed of the German invasion, advance, and victory was a salutary warning of the potency of the massive growth in German military power since the Nazi’s had come to power in 1933. With victory assured in the east, and with Poland carved up between Germany and the Soviet Union, Hitler was able to turn his attention to the west. Both Britain and France had responded to the growing crisis of the late 1930s with a significant enhancement of their military capabilities, but they still lagged behind the Germans. Many of their commanders anticipated a war similar to that fought between 1914 and 1918. When war was declared, as in 1914, Britain sent an Expeditionary Force to France with limited air support and equipped with armor that would prove to be no match for the Germans. The lack of Allied planning was emphasized by the rapid German victories in the Low Countries of France and Scandinavia. As with the victory in the east, the German success was largely the result of the integrated use of air and land power.

In the second title in this new series, author Edward Hooton examines the period between the victory over Poland in 1939 and the crushing defeats of Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Norway, and Denmark during the dark days of 1940 when, ultimately, Britain alone was left undefeated. As in the Polish campaign, the Luftwaffe’s role was pivotal. It won air superiority over the theatre of operations and was able to destroy much of the enemy’s material before the army swept forward.

FROM BARBAROSSA TO ODESSA , Volumes One and Two

by Dénes Bernád, Jean-Louis Roba, and Dmitriy Karlenko. From Barbarossa to Odessa: The Luftwaffe Strikes South-East, June-October 1941 (Volume 1) and The Air Battle for Odessa, August to October 1941 (Volume 2) cover the air combat which took place on the southern flank of the Eastern Front following Operation Barbarossa. The period covered in this first book saw the occupation of Bessarabia and southwest Ukraine and concluded when the Germans captured the area’s regional capital, Odessa, on October 16, 1941. It was one of the most bitter and intensive air campaigns fought in the east, because local Soviet commanders had dispersed most of their assets in time, thus preventing their destruction on the ground. This gave them the ability to respond effectively to the combined Axis onslaught. Accordingly, the Red Air Force was able to achieve some of its greatest successes of 1941 in this little-studied campaign.

This book covers the often overlooked involvement of aircraft from Axis states other than Germany, such as the Romanians, who claimed a total of over 600 air victories, the Hungarians, the Slovaks, and even the Bulgarians. This makes the subject varied and of great interest, particularly because of the large variety of aircraft types employed by both sides, all of which are fully documented. Aided by a large number of previously unpublished photographs, the book tells the story of the campaign from both sides and provides detailed eyewitness accounts from individual pilots who were involved in the fighting. Besides day-to-day operations, appendices will contain comprehensive victory and loss lists.

MESSERSCHMITT Me 210/Me 410 HORNISSE (HORNET)

by Werner Stocker and Peter Petrick

The Me210 and Me410 were originally planned as further developments of the twin-engined Messerschmitt Bf110 as the Luftwaffe sought a high-speed heavy fighter and gun platform. First flown in September 1939, the early version, Me210, proved extremely troublesome, suffering from in-flight instability and landing-gear problems. There were frequent accidents and production was terminated in April 1942 after 352 aircraft had been complete. A total of some 370 further examples were left incomplete on the production line.

First flown in 1942, the sleek Daimler-Benz-powered Me410, however, was much more successful and was manufactured in large numbers as a two-seat tactical aircraft fighter for ground-attacks and reconnaissance operations. More than 100 different variants and sub-variants had been produced by the end of 1944, using virtually every weapon available to the Luftwaffe. This book will enable readers to distinguish between the multitudes of sub-types and identify the various modifications, weapons systems, and conversion packs that were used.

MESSERSCHMITT Me264 AMERIKABOMBER: THE LUFTWAFFE'S LOST STRATEGIC BOMBER by Robert Forsyth & Eddie Creek. 9 x 12; 128 pages; 200 color illustrations; Hardcover.

In 1939, as Europe went to war, the German Air Ministry asked German aircraft manufacturers for proposals for an Amerika Bomber, an ultra- long- range, four-engined aircraft capable of attacking the U.S. from the airfields of Germany. Messerschmitts Me264 proposal and personal influence was such that he was not only allowed to go ahead with the design, but was also given the immediate order for three machines of this type. Using original German documentation and rare photographs, noted historians Robert Forsyth and Eddie Creek illustrate the story of the remarkable Amerika Bomber.

The aircraft types featured in this book in addition to the Me264 include the Ta 400, Fw 238, Ju 390, and the jet-powered Ho XVIII B flying wing.

SEEFLIEGER (Adam Thompson with David Wadman)

As a companion to the successful Luftwaffe Colours ‘Sea Eagles’ titles, this bright new book offers the reader a more detailed and varied study of the maritime aircraft and operations conducted by the Luftwaffe against the Allies in World War II. The Luftwaffe committed a wide range of aircraft to such operations from coastal reconnaissance, with shorter-range and shipboard patrol floatplanes, to long-range U-boat liaison and transports. Examples include the Arado Ar 196 A, Dornier Do 18 and Do 24, Blohm und Voss Ha 138, Heinkel He 115, Junkers Ju 52, the enormous Blohm und Voss 222 Wiking flying boat, and the equally impressive Blohm und Voss 238 – the heaviest aircraft to have flown in the world. The operations of the extensive force included ‘shadowing’ and long-range protection for U-boats under the auspices of the ‘Fliegerführer Atlantik’, shipboard operations assigned to the German capital ships, mine-laying, air-sea rescue, torpedo-bombing, and transport. Authors David Wadman and Adam Thompson examine in detail the various aircraft used by the Luftwaffe, a popular subject for modelers and historians. Beautifully illustrated using more than 220 color and b/w photographs and 15 detailed color profiles of the specific aircraft types, this is the definitive account of maritime aircraft used by the Luftwaffe.

Softbound 9 x 12", 96 pages, 235 color and b/w photos and 15 color profiles. Price: $28 USD / $35 CAD

SCHLACHTFLIEGER: Luftwaffe Ground-Attack Units 1937-1945 by J. Richard Smith, Chris Goss, Martin Pegg, Andrew Arthy, Nick Beale, and Robert Forsyth

One of the defining images of World War II is that of a Ju 87 Stuka dive-bombing a target. For the Luftwaffe, ground-attack aircraft represented an essential part of the German air force’s contribution to the offensive capability of the nation’s armed forces. Throughout the war, the Luftwaffe made use of these aircraft in both offensive and defensive actions. The aircraft contributed to the German victories early in the war and helped delay defeat once the Allied forces started to advance on both the Eastern and Western Fronts. While the Ju 87 was probably the most immediately identifiable aircraft used by the Luftwaffe in ground-attack operations, it was by no means the only type.

Prior to World War II, the Luftwaffe developed these tactics using aircraft manufactured by Henschel, Arado, and Heinkel. During the Spanish Civil War they were tested in real combat conditions with the Heinkel He 51 being used in support of Franco’s forces. Ground-attack aircraft were used by the Germans in most theatres of the war, including tank-busting Ju 87s on the Eastern Front and missile-fitted Focke Wulf Fw 190s after D-Day. Night Harassment Units using either Ju 87s or Fw 90s were also deployed to attack after darkness had fallen.

Large format (9" x 12"), softbound, 96 pages, 250 black & white and color photos and artwork. Price: $30 USD / $33 CAD/INT.

Aufklärer Series

Aufklärer, Volumes 1 & 2by David Wadman. These volumes cover the aircraft and operations of the Aufklärungsflieger or reconnaissance units from their origins in clandestine survey and photographic work over Poland and the United Kingdom in the late 1930s to their first operational use during the Spanish Civil War. When World War II began, Aufklärungsflieger were involved on every front where the Luftwaffe fought. They were active in the European skies, from Poland to Britain, and also played their part in the invasions of the Balkans and Russia. On the Russian and Mediterranean fronts, short-range reconnaissance usually involved low-level missions over enemy territory using the Fieseler Fi156 Storch and Hs126 biplanes, though Bf109s and Fw190s were also employed on such activities.

This book also includes an overview of the related ‘Wekusta’ or weather reconnaissance units, responsible for the collection of meteorological data where, because of the proximity of the enemy, normal land-based observation was not available. These units were assigned directly to the Meteorological Service of the Luftwaffe High Command and were considered very valuable assets.

Size: 9" x 12"; 96 pages; 250 b/w and color  photos; soft cover. Price: $30 USD / $33 CAD/INT.

Ju 87 Series

STUKA Vol. 1: 1937-1941

by Peter C. Smith. The name Stuka is an abbreviation of the German word Sturzkampfflugzeug, meaning dive bomber. The fearsome sight and sound of the Luftwaffe's Ju-87 Stuka diving on its target, its siren wailing, spearheaded German victories in Poland, Norway, the Low Countries, the Mediterranean, and Russia between 1939 and 1943.

This book covers the pre-war development of the Stuka concept in Germany and early dive-bomber prototypes. The Stuka’s initial deployment, in the Nazi Legion Condor sent to assist Franco’s forces in the Spanish Civil War is examined, followed by the aircraft’s central role in the blitzkrieg war. The operational history of the aircraft continues through the Channel Battles and the Battle of Britain. The volume concludes with the opening phases of the war against Russia.

Written by Peter C. Smith, an internationally renowned authority on dive- bombers and the Ju 87 in particular, the book contains an impressive selection of historic photos, artworks, and first-hand accounts from those who flew the aircraft.

9 x 12", 96 pgs., 200 black and white illustrations plus color artwork, softcover. Price: $30 USD / $33 CAD/INT. Order below.

STUKA Vol. 2: 1942-1945

by Peter C. Smith. During the first phase of World War II, the German forces advancing on all fronts, the Ju87 Stuka had been an essential element in the Luftwaffe’s armory attack. However, from mid-1943 as the War drug on, the Stuka began incurring heavy losses. Dunkirk, Warsaw, Rotterdam, and other early victories became distant memories as severe reversals came about in the East. Wherever possible and often against overwhelming resources, the Stukas supported the retreating German armies by conducting not just precision dive-bombing missions, but low-level ground attack operations against enemy transport targets, gun positions, and ships.

This second and concluding volume in this series examines the role of the Stuka during these years of retreat. Aspects of the Stuka’s role, which the book recounts, includes the attacks against the Malta convoys, the retreat in North Africa, the war over the Arctic, the Russian campaign including the battle for Stalingrad, and the collapse of the Eastern front.

Written by Peter C. Smith, an internationally renowned authority on dive bombers and the Ju87 in particular, this volume contains an impressive selection of historic photos, color artworks, and first-hand accounts from those who flew the aircraft.

Using a similar format to the Jagdwaffe series, this is the second in a two- volume study of the aircraft, camouflage, markings, and operations of the transport, airlift, and heavy lift units of the Luftwaffe between 1939 and 1945.
