HANDLEY PAGE HALIFAX (Ken Merrick)

The name Handley Page has been associated with the building of bomber aircraft since World War 1, thus it’s no surprise that in 1936 the British Air Staff awarded the company with a development contract for another new aircraft. Four out of every ten heavy bombers built in Great Britain were Halifaxes, and together with the Avro Lancaster they shared the RAF's strategic night bombing offensive from 1941 to the ultimate crescendo in 1944.

Though perhaps not as shapely as the Lancaster, its deeper and more spacious slab-sided fuselage made it more suitable for a much wider variety of roles. The type served with RAF Bomber Command on high and low-level attacks over occupied Europe and Germany, as well as undertaking radar counter-measures. It was used for Coastal Command on anti-submarine and shipping attacks, and also on the much overlooked but critical meteorological duties, such as making the historic D-Day weather analysis.

During the war years the Halifax flew 75,532 bombing raids over Germany, dropping over 227,610 tons of bombs. In total 6,176 Halifax machines were built, undergoing continuous development and improvement through the years. Post war, it operated on Transport and Coastal Command duties, and served in Europe, the Middle East, and India before finally leaving RAF service in 1953. The Halifax was a much-loved aircraft by the crews who flew in it, as it was able to absorb considerable battle damage and still manage to bring airmen safely back home; it had the highest survival rate for aircrew.

Within these pages Ken Merrick has written an immense study of the impressive Handley Page Halifax, setting out to prove that the type, for its time, was a bomber 'second to none'. LUFTWAFFE HIT-AND-RUN RAIDERS (Chris Goss)

In 1940 the Luftwaffe fitted bombs to their Messerschmitt 109s and Messershcmitt 110s, thus creating the Jagdbomber or Jabo. Jabos played a key role in the Battle of Britain, but then appeared to be forgotten until early 1942 when two fighter Staffeln were formed on the Western Front and carried out deadly lightning, low-level, hit-and-run attacks in southern Britain. Despite the relative successes of these two units, they were combined and redesignated Schenellkampfgeschwader 10 or SKG 10 in the spring of 1943. The Luftwaffe later decided to commit these warplanes to risky night operations, but the first such mission on April 16, 1943, sadly ended in tragedy. They were redesigned in 1944 and eventually named Nachtschlachtgruppe 20. Despite shortages of aircraft and pilots, they continued to fly on crucial missions against the Remagen Bridge and Allied motor transport columns until the end of the war.

With many rare and previously unpublished photographs of both the crews and aircraft, this impressive book tells the story of the famous nocturnal Jabo attacks carried out by I/SKG 10 and its subsequent designations. HEINKEL He 162 (Robert Forsyth and Eddie J. Creek)

From the summer of 1944, the adversity facing the leadership of the Third Reich was formidable. Ironically, the very existence of such adversity prompted many inventive designs for the air defense of the Reich on a determined and even manic scale. JUNKERS Ju 287: Germany's Forward Swept Wing Bomber (Stephen Ransom and Peter Korrell with Peter Evans)

The extraordinary Junkers Ju 287, the first truly swept-winged, jet-powered aircraft, took to the sky in August 1944, at a time when Germany was suffering sustained round-the-clock bombing by the Allied forces. FOCKE-WULF Fw 200 CONDOR (Juan-Carlos Salgado)

Prince Heinrich Zu Sayn-Wittgenstein was the third highest scoring ace of night-fighters in the Luftwaffe during World War II. Serving from mid 1941 until his death in 1944, he was a leading Ju88C-6 nightfighter pilot, later becoming the Gruppenkommander of part of NJG 5 on the Eastern Front. He was killed on January 21, 1944, after shooting down four RAF bombers, when his aircraft was brought down either by return fire or an RAF nightfighter. His aerial victories at that time were 83 in total, on both Eastern (29 Soviet) and Western Fronts (54). 

Prince Egmont zur Lippe-Weissenfield, an Austrian, started his career as a daylight fighter pilot flying 'heavy' fighters. He first became a nightfighter when serving under the famous Helmut Lent as Staffelkapitän of 5./NJG 2 in November 1941. He is accredited with 51 aerial victories while flying the Messerschmitt Bf 110, and has been ranked 21st among the German night fighter aces. He was tragically killed while serving as a member of the Stabsschswarm on March 3, 1944, when his aircraft crashed during a flight over the Ardennes.

This stunning new book is the result of many years of research into archival resources, previously unpublished personal family correspondence, photographs acquired during interviews with the respective families, technical data, and recollections supplied by the Princes' night-fighter contemporaries. MESSERSCHMITT Bf 110 C, D and E

The Messerschmitt Bf 110 was the Luftwaffe's prime multi-role heavy fighter. By the time Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, 10 Luftwaffe Gruppen had been equipped with this heavy fighter. However, as a long-range escort fighter, the Bf 110C received a disastrous mauling at the hands of the more nimble Hurricane and Spitfire during the "Battle of Britain". Rather than protecting the bombers under escort, the Bf 110C formations usually found that they were hard-pressed to defend themselves, and the farcical situation developed in which single-seat Bf 109E fighters were having to afford protection to the escort fighters. The complete failure of the Bf 110C in the role for which it had been conceived led to its eventual withdrawal from the Channel coast but did not result in any reduction in its production priority

LUFTWAFFE AT WAR VOL.2: Blitzkrieg in the West 1939-1940

by Edward Hooton. In September 1939, after years of increasing tension, the German assault on Poland unleashed warfare in Europe for the second time in a generation. For Poland’s allies the speed of the German invasion, advance, and victory was a salutary warning of the potency of the massive growth in German military power since the Nazi’s had come to power in 1933. With victory assured in the east, and with Poland carved up between Germany and the Soviet Union, Hitler was able to turn his attention to the west. Both Britain and France had responded to the growing crisis of the late 1930s with a significant enhancement of their military capabilities, but they still lagged behind the Germans. Many of their commanders anticipated a war similar to that fought between 1914 and 1918. When war was declared, as in 1914, Britain sent an Expeditionary Force to France with limited air support and equipped with armor that would prove to be no match for the Germans. The lack of Allied planning was emphasized by the rapid German victories in the Low Countries of France and Scandinavia. As with the victory in the east, the German success was largely the result of the integrated use of air and land power.

In the second title in this new series, author Edward Hooton examines the period between the victory over Poland in 1939 and the crushing defeats of Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Norway, and Denmark during the dark days of 1940 when, ultimately, Britain alone was left undefeated. FROM BARBAROSSA TO ODESSA , Volumes One and Two

From Barbarossa to Odessa: The Luftwaffe Strikes South-East, June-October 1941 (Volume 1) and The Air Battle for Odessa, August to October 1941 (Volume 2) cover the air combat which took place on the southern flank of the Eastern Front following Operation Barbarossa. The period covered in this first book saw the occupation of Bessarabia and southwest Ukraine and concluded when the Germans captured the area’s regional capital, Odessa, on October 16, 1941. It was one of the most bitter and intensive air campaigns fought in the east, because local Soviet commanders had dispersed most of their assets in time, thus preventing their destruction on the ground. This gave them the ability to respond effectively to the combined Axis onslaught. Accordingly, the Red Air Force was able to achieve some of its greatest successes of 1941 in this little-studied campaign.

This book covers the often overlooked involvement of aircraft from Axis states other than Germany, such as the Romanians, who claimed a total of over 600 air victories, the Hungarians, the Slovaks, and even the Bulgarians. MESSERSCHMITT Me 210/Me 410 HORNISSE (HORNET)

The Me210 and Me410 were originally planned as further developments of the twin-engined Messerschmitt Bf110 as the Luftwaffe sought a high-speed heavy fighter and gun platform. First flown in September 1939, the early version, Me210, proved extremely troublesome, suffering from in-flight instability and landing-gear problems. There were frequent accidents and production was terminated in April 1942 after 352 aircraft had been complete. A total of some 370 further examples were left incomplete on the production line.

First flown in 1942, the sleek Daimler-Benz-powered Me410, however, was much more successful and was manufactured in large numbers as a two-seat tactical aircraft fighter for ground-attacks and reconnaissance operations. More than 100 different variants and sub-variants had been produced by the end of 1944, using virtually every weapon available to the Luftwaffe. SCHLACHTFLIEGER: Luftwaffe Ground-Attack Units 1937-1945 by J. Richard Smith, Chris Goss, Martin Pegg, Andrew Arthy, Nick Beale, and Robert Forsyth

One of the defining images of World War II is that of a Ju 87 Stuka dive-bombing a target. For the Luftwaffe, ground-attack aircraft represented an essential part of the German air force’s contribution to the offensive capability of the nation’s armed forces. Throughout the war, the Luftwaffe made use of these aircraft in both offensive and defensive actions. The aircraft contributed to the German victories early in the war and helped delay defeat once the Allied forces started to advance on both the Eastern and Western Fronts. While the Ju 87 was probably the most immediately identifiable aircraft used by the Luftwaffe in ground-attack operations, it was by no means the only type.

Prior to World War II, the Luftwaffe developed these tactics using aircraft manufactured by Henschel, Arado, and Heinkel. During the Spanish Civil War they were tested in real combat conditions with the Heinkel He 51 being used in support of Franco’s forces. Aufklärer Series

Aufklärer, Volumes 1 & 2by David Wadman. These volumes cover the aircraft and operations of the Aufklärungsflieger or reconnaissance units from their origins in clandestine survey and photographic work over Poland and the United Kingdom in the late 1930s to their first operational use during the Spanish Civil War. When World War II began, Aufklärungsflieger were involved on every front where the Luftwaffe fought. They were active in the European skies, from Poland to Britain, and also played their part in the invasions of the Balkans and Russia. On the Russian and Mediterranean fronts, short-range reconnaissance usually involved low-level missions over enemy territory using the Fieseler Fi156 Storch and Hs126 biplanes, though Bf109s and Fw190s were also employed on such activities.

This book also includes an overview of the related ‘Wekusta’ or weather reconnaissance units, responsible for the collection of meteorological data where, because of the proximity of the enemy, normal land-based observation was not available. These units were assigned directly to the Meteorological Service of the Luftwaffe High Command and were considered very valuable assets.

STUKA Vol. 2: 1942-1945

However, from mid-1943 as the War drug on, the Stuka began incurring heavy losses.
