Special
Ops: Journal of the Elite Forces & SWAT Units, Volume
43This book contains these articles:
1) Enzian and Stern - Swiss Special Intervention Units in Berne -
Switzerland has a unique system whereby each canton has its own police SWAT
team, and in the case of Berne, it has Enzian and Stern. Enzian is a fulltime
dedicated counterterrorism unit, while Stern's part-time members specialize in
such duties as hostage rescue and VIP protection. This article shows police
officers in full combat gear and with their whole range of equipment as they
engage in exercise rehearsals. The author has successfully managed to convey the
essence of these two units in word and picture, though since this article was
written, both units have actually merged into a new entity known as Police Bern.
2) Joint Combined Exercise Cold Response
Exercise Cold Response was held in Norway during winter time, with a total of
10,000 troops from 11 nations participating in it. This guarantees a wide range
of soldiers and vehicles are covered in this in-depth article. Vehicles include
the Norwegian CV9030N, Leopard 2A4NO, M109A3GN, NM-113A2, various Bv 206,
Swedish Strv 103 tank and CV9040A, as well as the British BvS10 Viking. Of
course, soldiers in full winter gear and their personal weapons feature
throughout too. The photos are of superb quality and show man and machine in all
kinds of winter scenes. At the end of the article are features on the British
BvS10 and the novel AMOS (Armored Mortar System) twin-barreled mortar mounted on
a Swedish CV90 hull.
3) Aussies in Iraq
Australia has given unstinting support to the U.S.-led Coalition in Iraq and
Afghanistan, and this article examines the role played by "Aussies" in Iraq
since 2003. The article's text includes a precis of Australia's involvement in
the invasion in 2003, outlining the exploits of its Special Forces personnel in
particular. Photos show SAS and Commando Regiment personnel and equipment,
before moving on to subsequent deployments involving 8x8 ASLAVs and 4x4
Bushmasters. The coverage includes the invasion and the years beyond, with a
number of up-to-date photographs included. The overall number of Aussies in Iraq
may be small but their contribution has been great!

Sturmartillerie
at War, Volume 1
Sturmartillerie came about due to the efforts of Erich von Manstein, with this
new branch designed to support infantry assaults with self-propelled vehicles.
It was distinct from the Panzers as it was designed to work closely with the
infantry. To fulfill this vision, a whole new series of vehicles was designed.
The first and most common numerically was the Sturmgeschütz III. Later, other
vehicle types such as the StuG IV were added to the ranks.
This new book, the first volume in a comprehensive two-part study of German
Sturmartillerie in WWII, is the work of Frank De Sisto,. The book begins with an
explanation of the various StuG III Ausfuhrungen (models). The Ausf. G was the
ultimate version of StuG III, so a description is given of its essential data
and characteristics. The introductory text also covers the organization of
Sturmgeschütz units. In typical Concord style, the book is brimming with
black-and-white photos of StuGs in action. Photos show all the various
production madels from Ausf. A through to Ausf. G, and they span combat
operations from 1940-1945. Readers wishing to see the StuG in action will be
thrilled by the variety of pictures on offer, from the city streets of France in
1940, to the dusty summer of Operation Barbarossa, to the desperate winter of
1944/45 on the Eastern Front.
The center of the book gives pride of place to 16 plates by Laurent Lecocq,
these showing relevant tactical markings and camouflage schemes in full color.
The StuG III, StuG IV and even the Sturmpanzer IV all have their turn in the
limelight in this stimulating and enthralling account of Sturmartillerie in
action.

The
Fall of Monte Cassino by Michulec
Perhaps one of the best known battles in the Italian campaign was the Battle of Monte Cassino. There was actually a series of four battles, the first starting on January 17, 1944, and the last on 18 May. Monte Cassino was a key to the German defensive Winter Line south of Rome, also known as the Gustav Line. Concord Publications is proud to release a new volume in its Warrior series that is fully devoted to this pivotal battle.
The Battle of Monte Cassino involved almost the full spectrum of Allied nations - USA, France, New Zealand, India, Great Britain, and Poland - fighting against their battle-hardened German nemesis. However, the author has selected the final battle as the main focus for this title. While the book's introduction begins with a concise summary of the individual battles, it quickly moves on to a deeper examination of II Polish Corps, which played a principal role in the final bloody capture of the town of Monte Cassino and its famous monastery. The Poles suffered a staggering total of almost 4000 casualties, and it is said that the red poppies that cover Monte Cassino's slopes in spring owe their color to the blood spilt by these Polish soldiers!
This work by the experienced writer Robert Michulec first covers the German forces in a series of black-and-white photos, with many of them featuring Fallschirmjäger paratroopers that fought so tenaciously. The coverage then proceeds to the Polish force, including both infantry and armor troops. The photos are well chosen and give the reader a good feel for the conditions at the time, as well as the typical uniforms and equipment that were in use by both sides.
The book also contains four color plates by Dmitriy Zgonnik as its centerpiece. These feature three Germans (a paratrooper, Luftwaffe flak unit member and a mountain trooper) and a solitary Pole of the 3rd Carpathian Rifle Division. This book will make a very welcome addition to collections, especially as it covers such an important battle and features Polish soldiers that up till now have not received the attention they merit. Price: $21 USD/ $23 CAD/INT.

Barbarossa
The largest invasion the world has ever seen kicked off on June 22 1941, as Hitler's massed forces swarmed across the border into the Soviet Union. Operation Barbarossa, as the campaign was named, was supposed to last just ten weeks. In fact, Germany enjoyed five months of victory before they were eventually denied and turned away at the very gates of Moscow. Thus, the long and slow road to defeat began. This new book by Robert Kirchubel outlines Germany's ambitious hopes for Operation Barbarossa via a careful selection of photos.
In typical style for this series of Concord books, the work begins with some concise background text. Here the author explains what led up to the invasion of Russia, as well as providing salient points about the campaign right up to Operation Typhoon, the final assault on Moscow. The core of "Barbarossa" is the set of superb black and white photographs that document this spectacular, but ultimately futile, campaign. Soldiers are seen in all sorts of contexts in the vast steppes of Russia through contemporary camera lenses. There is a wide variety of vehicle types and weapons on show, which will please readers. Vehicles such as trucks, horse-drawn carriages and halftracks are all in evidence, as are numerous captured or destroyed Russian tanks and military vehicles. Photo captions are brief but provide relevant data and information about this long and arduous campaign.
The artist Ramiro Bujeiro has also provided four color plates depicting realistic-looking impressions of German soldiers and officers. These are accompanied by detailed descriptions giving pertinent facts about uniforms and personal equipment. This is an interesting volume packed with unique photos from this important campaign. As the writer states in his concluding paragraph, "When the war in Russia transformed from one of maneuver to one of attrition, it became a war Germany could no longer win." Readers wishing to see how Operation Barbarossa played out, and how German soldiers participated in it, will find this book a valuable ally.

Battle
in the East
There have been many books written about German forces fighting on the Eastern
Front. This is hardly surprising considering the enormity of the campaign and
the seemingly inexhaustible amount of data and photographs available. Concord is
pleased to release one more title, authored by Gordon Rottman, focusing on this
crucial campaign in the East. This volume is all about the infantry at the core
of Germany's military exploits in the enormous expanse of Russia.
The opening text delves into the complexities of the standard German infantry
division. Though usually short on motorized transport, these self-contained
combined-arms units fought extremely effectively, penetrating almost to the
gates of Moscow. The introduction includes a detailed table of organization
listing all major and minor subunits (usefully provided in both English and
German). It then proceeds with an annotated description of key divisional
components, which is very helpful in understanding how a division is equipped.
As is par for this series of books, the collection of black and white photos
forms the centerpiece. There photos show infantrymen from the early days of the
conflict through to much later periods. Members of many branches are on display,
for example, artillery, assault pioneers, military police, antitank,
reconnaissance and infantry. The photos reveal a host of interesting details and
show weapon systems found in the infantry division.
This book also features a set of four color plates expertly illustrated by
Stephen Andrew. These depict infantrymen and panzer grenadiers in a wide range
of uniforms fighting in various seasons and regions. Photo and color plate
captions are well detailed and thorough, providing a wealth of information. This
is a very helpful book for those wishing to learn more about those soldiers at
the "coal face" of Germany's extraordinarily grueling campaign in the East.

Gebirgsjäger,
German Mountain Infantry (Gordon Rottman &
Stephen Andrew)Long before the edelweiss was made famous in "The Sound of Music", this mountain flower was the symbol of Germany's Gebirgstruppen (Mountain Troops)! Especially trained and equipped to operate in alpine regions, these were elite troops of the German army. Incidentally, the common ascription of "Gebirgsjäger" actually only refers to "mountain infantrymen". In fact, units were composed of thewhole plethora of military occupations such as infantry, artillery, antitank, signals and engineer, for these divisions were self-contained. Gebirgstruppen really had their origin in WWI when fighting against Italian troops in the Alps, and interestingly they still exist today in the Bundeswehr.
This latest volume from Gordon Rottman examines the whole range of Gebirgstruppen in a series of fascinating photos. The book is replete with black and white photos showing these German mountain soldiers in all kinds of environments - sometimes in their natural element on snowy peaks, and at other times at lower altitudes. The photos include details of uniforms, weapons and vehicles used by Gebirgsjäger. They also give a representative look at the different geographical regions that these mountain troops operated in. Additionally, each photograph is accompanied by a detailed caption that offers insight into how these soldiers operated and were organized. The usual section of four color plates is the centerpiece of the book, and these high-quality illustrations by Stephen Andrew portray typical details of uniforms and personal equipment.
A number of Gebirgs-Divisions were created as WWII progressed, and all of the divisions are summarized in the introductory text. The same commentary gives a useful explanation of how these divisions were organized. Following in the successful vein of preceding titles in this Concord series, this book is another very helpful work for modelers and military enthusiasts to have on their bookshelves. In "Gebirgsjäger - German Mountain Infantry", these soldiers that proudly wore the edelweiss receive the attention they are due.

#6513 SOLDAT (2) The
German Soldier on the Eastern Front 1943-1944
(Gordon Rottman & Stephen Andrew)
The years 1943-1945 marked a reversal in the military fortunes of Germany, beginning with the huge defeat suffered by the 6th Army at Stalingrad on 2 February 1943. This volume, the second in the "Soldat" series, traces the lives and fate of the German soldier during this time period. The scope of the book is confined to the Eastern Front, which produced more casualties than all the other fronts combined. Since the topic of the book is the "Landser", it is naturally filled with period photos of Wehrmacht soldiers. These photos are inspiring too - soldiers appear in spring, in summer, in autumn, and in grueling winter settings. Their typical weapons and personal equipment are on full display, as are their uniforms. Pertinent points are highlighted in the photo captions, apprising the reader of a wide variety of topics. The writer is a well-published authority on WWII Germany, so the details are authoritative and informative. All photos are black and white, but are of a good quality so that they yield interesting details, including the many close-ups of soldiers. The photos are accompanied by four color plates produced by Stephen Andrew, which indicate accurate colors and uniform details. Each plate has its own detailed explanation, which will be of great use to the figure modeler and military enthusiast alike. The book's introduction is particularly useful, offering a description of how units were organized from 1943-1945, from the divisional level right down to the rifle company level. There is also a helpful section on which weapons, and in what quantities, were allocated to units. This is a welcome companion volume to the earlier "Soldat" book, completing an in-depth look at the soldiers of the Wehrmacht as they fought against all the odds on the Eastern Front in the second half of the war. 52 Pages, 135 photos, 4 Color Plates.

Battle
on Two Fronts 1944-45 by
Tom Cockle. Germany's greatest mistake in WWII was attempting to fight a two-front war - against Great Britain and the USA in the west, and against the Soviet Union in the east. This book examines warfare on both of these fronts with the focus solely on Germany. For readers wanting a photographic record of the 1944-45 period, then this book offers a scintillating range of pictures in one accessible package.
The book opens with a two-page precis of Germany's fighting withdrawal in the last year and a half of the Third Reich's history. It then proceeds to a varied collection of WWII black and white photos of German military vehicles fighting on both the Western and Eastern Fronts. Vehicles such as halftracks, Puma armored car, Borgward BIV, Wespe, Marder III Ausf. M, Hetzer, StuG III, StuG IV, Wirbelwind, Hummel, Panzer IV, Jagdpanzer IV, Panther, Bergepanther, Brummbar, Tiger I, and Tiger II all make starring appearances. In other words, pretty much the whole range of German late-war armored vehicles is represented!
The book is supported by a series of sixteen color plates by Douglas Jameson. They feature an interesting selection of vehicles, including the mammoth Maus that never actually got to see combat. This book is significant in its breadth of coverage in terms of types of vehicles, as well as the fact that it features scenes from both the Western and Eastern Fronts. The detailed and accurate captions from the knowledgeable author only add to the appeal of this splendid new volume in the ever-popular "Armor at War" series from Concord Publications

#7049 Panzer on the Ostfront 1941-43
by Frank V. De Sisto
Readers
of Concord's immensely popular "Armor at War" series will be familiar with the
author Frank V. De Sisto and his recent mini-series entitled "Panzer Vor!" The
latest offering from this knowledgeable author is "Panzer on the Ostfront
1941-43". It examines Germany's panzer units and equipment on the infamous and
dreaded Eastern Front. In this volume, the Eastern Front also includes the Balkans campaign (Operation Marita) of 1941 as Hitler removed this threat before embarking on his campaign against the Soviet Union. The book gives a concise summary of events leading up to and including Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia on 22 June 1941. It then continues the theme as the Nazi war machine expended itself in the intractable Russian steppes and harsh winters.
The focus of the book is naturally the black and white wartime photos. These show a whole range of vehicle types - soft-skin vehicles, half-tracks, armored cars, and of course a liberal serving of tanks and armored vehicles. These photos are sure to inspire modelers or simply give a sense of conditions on the Eastern Front at this time. Captions are accurate and provide helpful insights into photo contents. The book also features a set of sixteen color plates by Laurent Lecocq. These represent various vehicles and their typical painting and marking schemes.

PANZER VOR! 4: German Armor at War 1939-45.
By Frank V. De Sisto.
Readers will be pleased to know that the "Panzer Vor!" saga continues with this fourth volume in the mini-series! Following on with the successful formula seen in his previous books, the author, Frank De Sisto, presents a series of inspirational photos of German armored vehicles in WWII. In an age where many publishers are reprinting photos for the umpteenth time, this book is full of fresh photos that will likely be totally new to readers. The content includes a commendably wide range of German vehicles, with a welcome proportion of mainstream Panzers, including the StuG III, Hetzer, Panzer III, IV, Panther, Tiger and King Tiger. Rarer vehicles such as the Sturmpanzer IV and 10.5cm K (gp.Sfl.) also make an appearance. Foreign tanks in Wehrmacht service are also featured in glorious detail, including the Bulgarian T-11 light tank, Czech Pz.Kpfw.38(t), French Somua S-35, and Russian T-34/76. This is a veritable feast for armor junkies addicted to WWII tanks!
As usual for Concord's "Armor at War Series", there are sixteen color plates included as a centerpiece. These have been masterfully produced by Laurent Lecocq and show some attractive paint schemes that will be of interest to model-makers. Another feature of this book is the introduction, which breaks with tradition by forming an annotated glossary. This is very helpful, as there are a myriad of German language technical terms associated with Panzers and such like vehicles. The author has done a superb job of explaining many of these terms in an understandable and informative way. Readers will want to include this book in their collection, especially if they already have the earlier editions. (Order below)
