Panzer
Grenadiere der 5.SS-Panzerdivision "Wiking" im Bild
This photo book brings to life the history of the 5 SS
Panzer-Division Wiking in the words and the pictures of war reporters. In the text,
certain representative units of the division are described as follows:
The history of Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment Westland: the advance into
the Ukraine, defensive fighting on the Mius, the thrust through Rostow into the
Caucasus, the relinquishment of Caucasus position on Christmas Eve 1942, the
action in the salt steppes between Rostov and Stalingrad on the Manytsch, the
defensive battle in the Donez region in spring 1943, the defensive battle around
Charkow and at Isjum in summer 1943, the defensive fighting east of Kiew, on the
Dnjepr in autumn and winter 1943, the battle around Kowel, spring 1944, the
defensive battle around Warsaw and near Modlin in the summer and autumn of 1944
and, finally,
the fighting in Hungary up to the capitulation on 8th of May 1945.
Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment Nordland was a bridge to the Scandinavian
countries and nations, which united volunteers from Denmark, Norway and Finnland,
who went into action side by side with Reich Germans within 5 SS Panzer-Division
Wiking. It was formed in 1940, trained in Vienna/Schönbrunn, Klagenfurt and Graz
and participated in every stage of the division's history.
The regiment first went into action in 1941 at Tarnopol. Its further
engagement was the same as that of Wiking. Regiment Nordland was
attached to other formations only twice in that year, to cover the main
northern highway to Kiev and in the Dnjepropetrovsk bridgehead. There it stood at
the centre of the fighting until the regiments Germania and Westland had
arrived.
During the thrust by 1st Panzer Army to Rostov a further difficult
action carried out by the regiment was the protection of the northern flank,
where it prevented a deadly encirclement of the 1st Panzer Army. During that
battle, the regiment suffered considerable losses, so that
the 3rd Bataillon and some regimental units were disbanded and the personnel was used to
bring the 1st and 2nd Bataillons up to strength. In the spring, the Finnish volunteer bataillon finally joined the
regiment as the new 3rd (Finnish) Bataillon Nordland. In April 1943 Regiment
Nordland was released from the Wiking formation and expanded into
the 11th SS
Panzer-Grenadier Division Nordland.
Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment Germania on the other hand formed the
actual cadre of the SS division, for it was originally intended that the
division should be called Germania.
The division consisted of young Europeans, who fought until the bitter end in an exemplary manner as
part of the German Armed Forces .
